ABSTRACT

Skipjack tuna (Katsuwonus pelamis) belongs to the Scombridae family to determine the consistencycharacteristics of tuna fish loins for 28th days at frozen (−18 ± 2°C) storage. The biochemical, microbial, andsensory quality were analyzed by association of official analytical chemists method, plate count, and QualityIndex method (QIM), respectively. Protein, lipid, and moisture content were found to decrease significantly(p < 0.05) over the study period. Nonetheless, the values of ash, total volatile base nitrogen, tri-methyl aminenitrogen, pH, and peroxide increased significantly (p < 0.05). After 28 days of frozen storage, the total bacterialload in tuna fish loins was reduced from 3.8 × 105 to 3.3 × 104 colony forming unit/g. Total coliforms reducedfrom 113 to 5 Most Probable Number (MPN)/g, fecal coliforms declined to undetectable level from 13 MPN/g,and total Salmonella sp. also decreased from 1 MPN/g to unnoticeable, respectively. Organoleptically tunaloins were found in excellent condition up to 14th days although remained acceptable up to 28th days of thestudy period. The present findings should that the skipjack tuna loins can be retained under an acceptable limitfor human consumption at frozen storage conditions up to 28th days.

ABSTRACT

A 34 yrs old man of marfan syndrome, visited us with the complaints of palpitation, easy fatigability and chest discomfort for last 1year. He was pointed out to have the aortic root enlargement with severe aortic regurgitation & mild mitral regurgitation by echocardiography and CT angiogram. We excised the aneurysm, implanted a composite graft with prosthetic valve conduit (Bentall operation), directly attached the coronary arteries to the aortic graft, and made the distal anastomosis to the divided aorta. Postoperative course was uneventful. To our knowledge, this is the first successful case of Bentall operation in national Institute of cardiovascular Diseases.

ABSTRACT

The management of combined Coronary Artery Disease and Peripheral Vascular Disease is a challenge and brings with it numerous clinical dilemmas. The 56 year old gentleman presented to our department with significant triple vessel disease with occluded lower end of aorta just before bifurcation and occluded bilateral superficial femoral arteries. CABG with aorto-femoral and femoro popliteal bypass was done on the same setting. On 12th postoperative day he was discharged from hospital in good general condition. Follow up after 6 months of operation the patient is doing well and free of chest pain and claudication pain.

ABSTRACT

In this study, attempts were made to isolate Streptomyces sp. from soil samples of two different regions of Bangladesh and evaluate their antagonistic activity against fish and human pathogenic bacteria. A total of 10 isolates were identified as Streptomyces sp. based on several morphological, physiological and biochemical tests. Cross streak method was used to observe the antagonistic activity of the Streptomyces sp. isolates against different fish pathogens belonging to the genus Aeromonas, Pseudomonas and Edwardsiella and human clinical isolates belonging to the genus Klebsiella, Salmonella and Streptococcus. Seven Streptomyces sp. isolates showed antagonism against both fish and human pathogenic bacteria. Four isolates viz., N24, N26, N28 and N47 showed broad spectrum of antagonistic activity (80-100%) against all genera of fish and human pathogenic bacteria. The isolate N49 exhibited highest spectrum of antagonism against all fish pathogens (90-100%) but comparatively lower degree of antagonism against human pathogens (50-60%). Rest of the two isolates (N21 and N23) showed variability in their antagonism. Results showed that broad spectrum antibiotic(s) could be developed from the isolates N24, N26, N28 and N47against several human and fish pathogens. The isolate N49 could be a potential source of antibiotic, especially for fish pathogenic bacteria.
